It was a night of extraordinary glamour for the 51 Miss USA Pageant contestants when they were joined by reigning 2010 Miss USA Rima Fakih, reigning 2010 Miss Universe Jimena Navarrete of Mexico -- both of whom won their crowns here in Las Vegas last year -- and 2007 Miss USA Rachel Smith, who hosts ABC’s On the Red Carpet.
All of them met at hair guru Michael Boychuck’s salon Color at Caesars Palace last night to unveil limited-edition, Miss Universe Pageant-inspired nail lacquer shades from OPI. Each of the 51 pageant princesses had their nails done by OPI technicians in preparation for tonight’s preliminary competition in the Theater for the Performing Arts at Planet Hollywood.
Also there was 1995 Miss USA Shanna Moakler, a director of the Miss California USA Pageant, and Miss USA and Miss Universe Organization President Paula Shugart. It was a great night for my pal Michael because everybody wanted him doing their hair and posing with him for photographs!
Tonight, the 51 contestants run through the entire show, including their Kandy Wrappers swimsuit parade. Vegas DeLuxe earlier today posted the official photographs of the evening gowns the girls will wear tonight and Sunday. NBC.com is streaming the preliminaries beginning at 8 p.m. with host Las Vegas radio DJ Chet Buchanan.
I’m also going to get a demonstration tonight of the revolutionary IPOWOW application that will be used for the first time Sunday. Viewers will be encouraged to download the app on their iPhones, Androids, iPads and other handheld devices. Then every time their favorite contestant is shown onscreen, they can vote and the real-time scoring will appear! The voting will not be seen by the contestants or the judges, but viewers are selecting a favorite into the Top 15 after the judges have chosen their 14.
The meters will be used this fall on several talent and reality TV shows, but Miss USA has first use Sunday. We’ll have more to report on this technology tomorrow, along with our interviews with Rima on the highlights of her year and with 2011 Miss Nevada USA Sarah Chapman as she prepares for Sunday.
