There’s a truly memorable moment in Aaron Sorkin’s tragically short-lived Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip: Cast member Simon Stiles (D.L. Hughley) tells another character how he used to be in a gang, and that he almost threw his life away before deciding to get out. We’ve seen scenes like this before, sure, but in Hughley’s hands the scene had ... believability. That’s because, for Hughley, it was all true. He had been a member of the Bloods before one of his cousins was shot and he decided it was time for a change. To say he turned things around is an understatement. Hughley became that rare breed of entertainer that fits into multiple roles with ease: an accomplished comedian (The Original Kings of Comedy), actor (The Hughleys and Studio 60) and even political commentator (CNN’s brief D.L. Hughley Breaks the News). He’s one of the most likable guys in comedy, but don’t take our word for it: Check out his stand-up this weekend.
