In one of the few film-related segments in Jay and Silent Bob Get Old Saturday night at Vinyl, the titular characters played by Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes read their intro scene to Smith’s upcoming film Moose Jaws. The movie, as the title suggests, is an homage to the classic shark blockbuster … with the sea creature replaced by a vicious moose. Jay and Silent Bob play the part of Quint the hunter, and as Jay reveals his name, he introduces the crowd to Silent Bob, whom he calls his “hetero life mate.”

That’s an apt description of the relationship between Smith and Mewes, best friends since well before the Clerks days, and their podcast is mostly a love fest between the two. Fans looking for inside film knowledge would have been better off at one of Smith’s other two shows of the weekend, An Evening With Kevin Smith or Hollywood Babble-On.

Basically, JASBGO exists so that Smith and his audience can check in with Mewes about his sobriety and get a weekly update. (The man who portrayed Jay to iconic status says he’s now five years and three months clean.) We also get lots of talk about babies and family life, and Smith and Mewes have such a natural rapport, they can make just about anything entertaining. So when the two husbands chat about trying to squeeze in sex with their otherwise committed wives, it comes off as relatable madness.

By breaking the live podcast into segments, Smith and Mewes keep things fresh and maintain momentum. That means reading from the 30 different journals Mewes wrote during 30 different rehab stints. And it means closing with the game “Let Us F*ck,” in which Mewes writes down names of made-up sex positions, and then acts them out with different audience members.

No matter how old they get, no matter what the medium, two things shine through for Smith and Mewes: their humor and their love for one another.
