Second time’s the charm

Iron Man 2 didn’t, but some sequels actually improve on their predecessors...

The Godfather, Part II (1974) Francis Ford Coppola made this sequel both a brilliant continuation of the story of the Corleone crime family and an evocative look at its origins.

The Empire Strikes Back (1980) Sure, Star Wars established the world in a galaxy far, far away, but Empire told a darker and more complex story, and made the setting feel fully realized.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) After a slow start to the movie franchise based on the classic sci-fi TV series, Khan captured the excitement and character dynamics of the show’s best episodes.

Aliens (1986) James Cameron’s sequel isn’t so much better as it is a great film in a different genre, with one of the greatest kick-ass heroines in the history of cinema.

Before Sunset (2004) Richard Linklater’s sequel to Before Sunrise took a story that seemed to have a perfect ending and continued it beautifully.
