Thanks to the success of Marvel’s “cinematic universe,” its interconnected series of superhero films including Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, other studios are scrambling to create their own movie “universes.” Here’s what’s in the works from Sony, which holds the license for Marvel’s Spider-Man characters.

Venom The villain/antihero, who bonds with an alien symbiote, was played by Topher Grace in Spider-Man 3, but he’ll get a reboot in this solo movie set to be directed and co-written by Alex Kurtzman, whose screenwriting credits include the Transformers and Star Trek movies.

The Sinister Six This team of Spider-Man’s archenemies will also get its own movie, although the studio has yet to confirm which characters will appear. Speculation centers on existing movie villains the Lizard, Green Goblin, Electro and the Rhino. Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods, Cloverfield) will write and direct.

The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4 Of course, Spider-Man will continue to star in his own films, with the third set for release in 2016. Word has it that Venom and The Sinister Six will hit theaters before ASM4, with Spider-Man making appearances in both.
