Those who witnessed Kid Meets Cougar during its five-year run came to expect member Brett Bolton’s imaginative videos and projections, which only got better as time went on. It’s that reputation that made Bolton’s solo debut as Kitze + the CPUs a must-see at the Bunkhouse last Friday night. Alternating between mod color blocking (think: ’60s-era red, white and blue) and shimmering, starry projections, Bolton laid on the eye food with an impressive three-panel projection. He also delivered with his new tunes, his most diverse set of songs yet.

“Like New” and “Breakers” (both up at Soundcloud) brought the effervescent 8-bit playfulness of KMC with the added celestial-pop textures of Phoenix, plus an unexpected dark turn with deeper bass, layered vocals, live drum-machine playing and live looping a la Grimes. Another song of note, slow jam “Something Crazy,” will be released with a few more songs next month. And while there’s always room for improvement (more confidence on the vocals and pushing beyond that KMC barrier), Bolton’s debut proved what we already knew: He’s always one to watch.
