Five thoughts: Motörhead at House of Blues (August 21)

1. To get the obligatory Lemmy Kilmister health report out of the way, the legendary frontman looked great in his element. With his feet planted and his fingers strumming, the 69-year-old hardly struggled at all to keep up with his band’s rapid rock 'n' roll. It wasn’t until Lemmy took laborious steps off the stage during bandmates’ solos and trembled while trying to take a beer out of his mic-stand cup holder that fans were reminded of his rash of recent ailments.

2. Part of the London band’s magic is a stubborn consistency, so it was strange when it eschewed usual opener “We Are Motörhead” for a pair of cuts off 1979’s Overkill. The crowd didn’t respond kindly, standing eerily still. That changed when the band ripped into “We Are Motörhead” third, with a pair of beers and crowd surfers flying through the air as a moshpit began to swirl. The energy level never ebbed through the rest of the 70-minute set.

3. Another setlist oddity: the band ignoring its eponymous debut on a night celebrating the record’s 38th anniversary. Then again, it’s no surprise Motörhead isn’t much for pageantry.

4. The opening bands provided the theatrics. At the end of an otherwise forgettable set, 64-year-old Saxon singer Biff Byford wadded up and chewed on a setlist to commence a requests-only portion of the 41-year veteran band’s performance. Crobot counterpart Brandon Yeagley consumed no paper, but led a riotous 30-minute charge from the '70s-steeped heavy metal band from Pennsylvania. At one point, Yeagley leapt on the shoulders of guitarist Chris Bishop, all the while maintaining a vocal range few contemporaries can match.

5. Motörhead is past the days of putting on a transcendent live show, but it’s still darn good and a whole lot of fun. Lemmy’s last address was, “Don’t forget us. We are Motörhead, and we play rock 'n' roll.” We won’t, and we know.
