If the first round of performing bands for Punk Rock Bowling 2016 reads like a greatest-hits version of the festival, you’d hardly be exaggerating. However, few fans will find fault with the initial lineup for what has become not only a punk Mecca celebrating the genre's groundbreakers and heroes, but a Vegas Memorial Day Weekend tradition, now in its 18th edition and stretched across five days.

The large-type names for the May 28-30 2016 outdoor stage program—to be held again in Downtown Las Vegas, at Stewart Avenue and 7th Street—are pioneers Descendents (2011 and 2014 participants), Celtic rawkers Flogging Molly (2010) and Flag (2013), comprised of five former Black Flag members playing the music of that iconic California hardcore group.

Joining them on the bill are The Dillinger Four (2007), Youth Brigade (2008, 2010), Subhumans (2013), Face to Face (2014), Anti-Nowhere (2014) and The Dwarves (2009, 2011, 2014). The only PRB virgins in the first-wave announcement are Brits The Buzzcocks and The Exploited—both of whom were on last year’s staff-compiled PRB wishlist (score!)—and Washington, D.C., melodic hardcore act Dag Nasty.

The outdoor stage offering will be complemented by the popular late-night club shows around East Fremont, a poker game, an art show, pool parties and, of course, the lively bowling tournament that inspired it all. More details on those events, as well as ticket info and additional music acts, will be announced in the future.

Also notable for Punk Rock Bowling 2016: It’s expanding eastward. Two weeks later, the festival moves to Asbury Park, New Jersey for its first non-Vegas incarnation, its outdoor program—which will share some but not all the performers of the Vegas edition, and have some of its own (like Cock Sparrer, The Slackers and Agnostic Front)—taking place June 10-12 at the summer stage at the revered Stone Pony. Finally, a Las Vegas music festival inspires another.
