Drake September 6, Boulevard Pool.

Drake boldly opened his Sunday-night set with a powerful one-two combo, “Trophies” and “We Made It,” two tracks he released only on Soundcloud, no album or iTunes catalog to call home. It was a testament to the 28-year-old rapper’s golden touch—virtually every song he releases is a massive hit, despite circumventing traditional distribution channels. That could also be said for his show-stealing guest appearances on Big Sean’s “Blessings” and ILoveMakonnen’s “Tuesday,” from which he performed one verse each. The other artists weren’t there to help, but no one seemed to care.

Performing in conjunction with comedian Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat Weekend, Drake played to a packed house at Cosmopolitan’s Boulevard Pool. Before a diverse crowd made up of dudebros, strippers, hip-hop heads and girls wearing Team Drake tees, Drizzy graced the stage wearing all black everything, rocking an unapologetic, post-Meek Mill victory beard.

When launching into the anthemic “Started From the Bottom,” he hinted toward his nightly take, changing the last lyric of the first verse to boast, “Now I’m out in Vegas, got a million for a show.” It was around this time that a trend in his performance began to emerge, with Drake leaving what he referred to as “all that romantic sh*t” off the stage. There was no “Hold On, We’re Going Home” to be found on this night.

Speaking of going home, Drake wished us safe travels all too soon, ending the show after 40 minutes with no encore, as fans began asking “Wait, he’s done?!” But not before closing with “Energy,” in which he boasts that he’s “got a lot of enemies.” He used the song to segue into Meek Mill diss track “Back to Back,” punctuating his set with a drop-the-mic moment. He left on a high note, but finished before we could cheekily ask why he didn’t perform “Over.”
