Free Comic Book Day is coming! Free Comic Book Day is coming! And while dressing up as your favorite character isn’t required, it’s highly encouraged.

On Saturday, head to a local shop to choose one of 50 titles, totally free. Highlights this year include Marvel’s Secret Wars, about superheroes struggling to survive in a strange, new realm; Divergence, a sneak peek of DC’s upcoming summer series; and Fight Club, a Dark Horse Comics sequel to the novel-turned-movie by Chuck Palahniuk, who also penned the comic.

The event, which always falls on first Saturday of May, was created 13 years ago to promote the art form. Alternate Reality Comics (4110 S. Maryland Parkway) will host live artists, Grouchy John’s Coffee and Zombie Dogs food truck. Cosmic Comics (3830 E. Flamingo Road) will offer free sketches from live artists, face painting, balloon animals, dress-up photo ops and raffles. Maximum Comics (two locations) will have meet-and-greets with Wonder Woman, Spider Man and other popular characters. Check with your local shop to see if it’s participating.
