It’s been on the lips of Downtowners for a while: “When are we going to get a grocery store?” The renaissance of Downtown Vegas is clearly underway, with newcomers flocking to mid-mod fixer-uppers and a bar opening every weekend. However, a real, well-stocked market north of Sahara has been the holy grail—revered, yet unattainable.

Until now. Anchoring the corner of Oakey and the Boulevard since 1955, White Cross Drugs was once a blue-and-white beacon attached to Tiffany’s Diner, the purveyor of greasy-spoon comfort. The drugstore closed in March 2012, and brothers Jimmy and Nick Shoshani purchased the store, promising to reopen it as a neighborhood market. After a 14-month odyssey that cost them a bundle, the brothers, who also own nearby Bells Market, answered the masses with White Cross Market’s grand opening on July 20.

Taking the mic after a long line of illustrious Las Vegans, Jimmy spoke to the sun-drenched crowd: “Everyone who came through Bells kept asking us when we were going to open a grocery store.”

Now that the ribbon’s been cut, it’s time for Downtown to put its money where its mouth is. One foot over the threshold and you can tell that’ll be easy. The classic façade gives way to a modern interior, where finicky shoppers can get everything from seasonal produce at affordable prices to craft beer.

Grab those reusable shopping bags. There’s a market in the neighborhood.
