An upcoming lantern fest combines hope with spectacle in the Mojave

Write your own personal message on a large lantern and then send it skyward at the upcoming Rise Lantern Festival between Las Vegas and Jean in October.

Maybe you’re hoping you’ll find a job. Or you’re celebrating a significant anniversary. Or you just want to tell your mother you love her. Why not commemorate that sentiment in style—and with a bit of glowing spirituality?

On October 18, a dry lake bed between Jean and Las Vegas will come alive with light from thousands of lanterns, each emblazoned with personal messages of hope, dreams or well wishes, and launched as part of the inaugural Rise Lantern Festival.

It’s one of only two such Rise festivals held this year (the other is in Bali, Indonesia), and families are strongly encouraged to attend, as the large lanterns typically take two to three people to send skyward. As part of Rise’s sustainability pledge, everyone will be shuttled to the event, and all lanterns are biodegradable (and recovered shortly after launch).

As a finishing touch on an emotional evening, fireworks will light the sky simultaneously with your lanterns. Talk about burning in your memory.
