The effort to find homes for the thousands of unwanted, neglected, lost or abandoned animals in the Las Vegas Valley can always use more support. And now is a good time to get involved, as two local shelters have creative fundraising initiatives this month.

The Nevada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which houses more than 1,000 animals on any given day, has teamed up with the Tropicana’s rock ’n’ roll production show Raiding the Rock Vault for a special fundraiser called “Gimme Shelter,” playing off of the popular Rolling Stones song. Throughout August, donation boxes can be found inside the hotel’s Tropicana Showroom, where Raiding’s audience members can contribute to the no-kill shelter. And those adopting animals this month who show a Raiding ticket stub will receive a “special gift” when going home with new furry friends.

“Every one of us here at Raiding the Rock Vault is an animal lover and a big supporter of everything NSPCA does in the Las Vegas community,” lead singer Paul Shortino said in a press release. “So many beautiful animals have ended up on the street because of terrible circumstances, and because of NSPCA, those creatures have a chance at life.”

The Animal Foundation operates Nevada’s largest animal shelter, taking in more than 40,000 animals each year. Today from 4-6 p.m. at the Stitch Factory, the organization is benefiting from the Book Cover Tee Las Vegas fundraiser, combining fashion, literature and philanthropy with a pop-up T-shirt shop. Students from the Art Institute of Las Vegas reimagined and designed seven book covers (titles range from The Great Gatsby to The Cat in the Hat and The Sum of All Fears) to be screened on shirts, which will be sold at the Downtown space, with all proceeds going to the Animal Foundation. Can’t make it to the event? An organizer says anything that isn’t sold will be available for purchase on Animal Foundation’s website.

The nonprofit, which also offers foster opportunities, lost-and-found services and low-cost spay and neuter and vaccination clinics, also holds its annual One Drunk Puppy charity wine tasting later this month. The August 15 fundraiser (6-9 p.m. at the Silverton) features beverage tastings, appetizers and a silent auction, and tickets are $30 for pre-sale and $40 the day of the event.
