A few pumpkin beers to enjoy—and avoid—this autumn season

Pumpkin season is here! While spiced lattes and nostalgic pies sound great, I’m definitely more excited for something else: pumpkin beer. There’s something about the seasonal squash that just lends itself to the making of great flavored beers. Is it the notes of nutmeg? Does the fresh pumpkin pulp brighten the beer up? Who cares? Just get to the store and pick some up—this stuff will be gone before you know it. Not sure of what to buy? Neither was ... Read more...

Public House brings home the beer with new growlers

Fans of Public House’s three-plus-page beer list have a new reason to hit the sauce. The Venetian gastropub is now offerings suds to-go, via 64-ounce growlers emblazoned with the bar’s slogan: United we stand, pint in hand. Customers can take brews like Big Dog’s Tyrone, My Man, Rogue’s Hazelnut Brown and Green Flash Le Freak home in the half-gallon growlers, which cost $8 empty and range from $22 to $52 full, depending on your beer of choice. And since it ... Read more...

Enjoying an ever-evolving Belgian Saison at the Freakin’ Frog

“Fresh beer tastes different than other beers,” Adam Carmer says, repeating himself, not just for effect, but because in the case of tonight’s cask beer tasting at the Freakin’ Frog, that’s very important. After all, the beer being tasted tonight is less than two weeks old, Frog owner Carmer explains, letting that tidbit sink in. A squeal from the back of the room gets Adam’s amused attention. “That’s a beer squeal,” he says, taking great pride in the reaction. This ... Read more...

Finding a Holy Grail of bourbons in Nevada

I fell in love with Kentucky Bourbon Distillers last year during a tasting at the Freakin’ Frog. I sampled not one but seven of their products: Kentucky Vintage, Willett Pot Still Reserve, Rowan’s Creek, Noah’s Mill, Johnny Drum, Pure Kentucky and Willett Family Estate American Rye Whiskey. Each was distinctive and immensely enjoyable. What made this tasting even more exciting was the news that KBD would be selling its products in Nevada. Since then, I have been scouring the shelves ... Weekend Hangover: T&T Mariachi Brunch

Let’s be honest: the booze makes the brunch. Without a mimosa or Bloody Mary, you’re really just having a late, lazy breakfast. This meal without a cocktail is like taking the bacon out of a BLT. Vegas is big on boozy brunches, and this past weekend I discovered one loaded with tequila, music, spicy bites and an overall fun, laidback vibe. The Mariachi Brunch at T&T (in Luxor) may not be as well-known as other Sunday specials on the Strip, ... Read more...

Great beer meets a great barrel at the Freakin’ Frog

It’s less than 24 hours after Sunday night’s cask beer tasting at the Freakin’ Frog, and I am still feeling the after-effects—not that I mind in the slightest. Sunday’s tasting, the third in Freakin’ Frog’s cask beer series, featured Saison d’Erpe Mere from Brouwerjj de Glazen Toren in Belgium. This cask came courtesy of the Zymatore Project, sponsored by B. United International, which, on its website, explains its mission: To blend beers with barrels (in the case of Saison d’Erpe, ... Weekend Hangover: Checking out the new Sierra Gold

Desert Shores is my neighborhood, and we could use a better neighborhood bar. I was hopeful I’d find it upon my first visit to the brand new Sierra Gold at the corner of Buffalo and Smoke Ranch, and for good reason: Though it’s been closed for years, this site was the former home of Becker’s Steakhouse, for a short time an odd but comfortable neighborhood gem with an old-school Vegas feel. I was hoping the folks at Golden Gaming, architects ... Read more...

Try a new wine, or nine, at the Generous Pour

For some, wine is an acquired taste. It takes time and a lot of sampling to find what you really like, which is why wine tastings are a great way to introduce your palate to a variety of new flavors. But don’t forget that food can play a big part in wine drinking. The correct pairing can bring out a whole new character in a wine and might help land it on your list of favorites. The Capital Grille at ... Read more...

Tandem is tops in the Valley

I’m currently running down a list of our Valley’s locally bottled beer, as there is quite a strong selection at the moment. Joseph James, Big Dog’s and Tenaya Creek are giving beer lovers a serious reason to maybe skip that six-pack of Deschutes, Stone or even Dogfish Head. Let me just get this out of the way: Our local beer is good. Very good. I have yet to try one that disappointed. But tops on my list is a product ... Read more...
