Awash in the turning tide in Washoe

I’ve never lived in Washoe County (and there are those who might argue that what I do in Clark County ain’t exactly “living”), but I spent a fair amount of time there when I lived in Northern California. When us Chicoans and Reddingites wanted to play, it was a fairly quick trip over the Sierra Nevadas to Reno. Sometimes Lake Tahoe, too. But my perception of that region has always been something akin to, “Not Democratic.” For years it has ... Read more...

A scene from an airport

About a year ago I wrote a story. Wait, there’s more. About a year ago I wrote a story full of vignettes gleaned from McCarran International Airport, where I spent more than a month talking to bar patrons sitting at the same stool at the Budweiser Race Track Bar & Grill located outside the gates, across from the Cirque du Soleil boutique just past the escalators. I’m sure you know the place. Glass-encased bar, opened 24/7, is what it is. ... Read more...

65,000 applicants not enough for Wynn?

About a week after the Las Vegas Sun reported on September 25 that Wynn Resorts had received 65,000 applicants for 5,300 available positions at the new Encore resort and casino, an ad appeared in the food/beverage/hospitality section of the jobs listings on Craigslist. Actually, there were a few ads. “Cocktail server – Wynn Las Vegas/Encore.” “Food and Beverage Manager – Wynn Las Vegas/Encore.” “Host Person – Wynn Las Vegas/Encore.” The ads bragged about the Wynn’s 111,000 square foot casino, “22 ... Art meets politics on the Bama Bus

A red, white and blue VW bus, stenciled with the words: “Obama-Biden,” “hope,” “change” and “progress,” is lost somewhere in Vegas, trying to find the UNLV campus from the intersection of Rainbow and Sahara. I’m on the phone with Annie Woods, the young woman in charge of the Bama Bus operation, and I’m trying to figure where on campus the bus will be setting up shop for a short political rally this past Monday, but I end up giving her ... A glut of debate drinking games – Weekly gleans the very best from the political scrum

With November 4 drawing near, the presidential race took a turn for the ugly this week as both the Obama and McCain camps swapped mud for rocks and took turns slinging political boulders at each other. It’s vaguely caveman-like, all this chest-beating and grunting, but it makes for some deliciously entertaining television. The presidential and vice presidential debates have turned into the best reality TV of the fall season (apologies to Dancing with the Stars, The Hills, The Biggest Loser, ... Read more...

A glass raised to karmic justice

Killian’s Angels, the city’s pre-eminent all-women’s Celtic-fashioned ensemble, played Brendan’s Pub at the Orleans last night. During their second set, the band was distracted by several TVs behind the bar broadcasting the KLAS Channel 8 coverage of the O.J. Simpson verdict in his armed robbery and kidnapping trial in Las Vegas. The band halted as the word “Guilty” flashed across the bottom of the screen. When someone shouted “of all 12 counts!” to the stage, the band held aloft their ... Read more...
