Congratulations to hotel mogul Steve Wynn and his Le Reve cast and crew on celebrating its 2,000th performance this Friday. Le Reve opened on the same day he premiered the new Wynn resort on April 28, 2005. More than 250 cast and crew work on Le Reve each day.
Incredibly, 32 performers and 58 production staff have been with the show since the beginning. During the water spectacular’s 2,000 performances, 1.2 million towels have been used, more than 12,800 pairs of red tango shoes have been repaired, and some 104,000 loads of laundry have been done.
It’s a theatrical experience with an aqua spectacle in the round and features aerial acrobatics, provocative choreography, powerful performances and elaborate effects. Dancing With the Stars pro dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy, who starts Burn the Floor on Broadway this Friday with Kym Johnson, choreographed several of the new Le Reve routines.
*Stars have been showing up in increasing numbers for singer Lani Misalucha’s Voices at the Las Vegas Hilton. Our contributing photographer Erik Kabik captured these photos of Mike Tyson with wife Lakiha Spicer, music legend Dionne Warwick, jazz and soul great Freda Payne and Wanda Dee.
*French chef Guy Savoy flew in from Paris to join his son Franck at their four-star restaurant Guy Savoy in Caesars Palace for the launch of the new high-speed menus for guests who want to combine a Colosseum show and an elegant dinner. I went back into the kitchen to watch Guy preparing his new Menu Elegance: marinated lobster, salad and gelee of summer herbs; crispy sea bass with delicate spices; pumpkin and truffle soup with poached egg; “poached-roasted” baby chicken, couscous of cauliflower, spinach puree and mustard jus; fruit; and chocolate. To say this was heaven would be an understatement, but it absolutely is some of the finest cuisine on Earth.

*Just asking if the son of one of our leading Strip hotel executives found himself behind bars for an afternoon after drag racing through a Mexican town during a Baja California race with motorcycle master Jesse James this week. I’m hearing their vehicles also were confiscated for a day and returned with a warning not to be repeat offenders. Lucky lads!

I’m celebrating my arrival in America exactly 46 years ago today! I have much to be thankful for this holiday weekend. I landed in New York days after the assassination of President Kennedy after a weeklong voyage on the Queen Mary from England, where I worked at the Daily Mail as a reporter. I’d flipped a coin for a two-year leave of absence with either heads for America or tails for Australia. You know how that turned out, and I never went back home. I came here with just $133 in my pocket and found a cheap $29-per-week hotel room -- no bathroom, of course -- before landing a temporary Christmas sales job at Lord & Taylor on 5th Avenue.
I ran around the Manhattan newspapers every lunch break looking for a job as a journalist. It took three weeks, but I landed at the New York Daily News, and the rest, as they say, is history. It’s been an extraordinary ride, and I’m grateful to every one of you who played a part. My first paycheck in England was a meager $10 a week, and five years later, my first paycheck in America was $260 a week. What a wonderful, exciting journey it has been. Thank you, sincerely!
*Trying to keep track of Bravo’s TV schedule for new Top Chef Las Vegas programs is a challenge in its own right. If I’m right, there is no new episode this week, and instead three back-to-back reruns before resuming next Wednesday with the Final Four cheftestants.
