Diagnosis: Itchy Choad at The Bunkhouse
When you name your band Itchy Choad, you run some minor risks. I thought it sounded like a new kind of STD - an infection of the skin on the testicles coupled with a nasty rash. Itchy. Choad. In reality the health center at UNLV isn’t seeing any cases of Itchy Choad, because it’s actually the name of a local band that is gaining steam with every gig they play. The band used to just be C.H.O.A.D., which stands for ... Read more...

Theory of Flight soars tonight at Wasted Space
Theory of Flight is three things at least: how birds and planes utilize weight, drag, lift and thrust to defy gravity; a 1998 movie starring Kenneth Branagh and Helena Bonham Carter about a man who tries to fly by leaping off a building and the woman who begs him to deflower her before she dies of motor neuron disease; an awesome local alt-rock band that will be playing at Wasted Space at the Hard Rock tonight along with Cherry Hill ... Forget Tim McGraw and Faith Hill - check out Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert
Are Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert the new Tim McGraw and Faith Hill? Like that superstar married couple, Shelton and Lambert are a pair of romantically involved (though not married) country singers mounting a co-headlining tour to appeal to their overlapping audiences. Tonight at the Star of the Desert Arena in Primm, they demonstrated that their concept of a seamless show, with the pair trading off mini-sets over the course of more than two hours, could be a success, as ... Hello chap! Estelle at House of Blues and other UK acts worth a listen
Ever since I heard Estelle’s playful ode to the gents on this side of the pond, I’ve been hooked on its hip-pop melody and her sueded vocals. Hell, she even made Kanye add a British lilt to his rapping: “Look sharp like a London bloke/before he speak his suit bespoke/And you thought he was cute before look at this peacoat tell me he’s broke.” (Can’t hurt that she’s also completely adorable.) You can get your fix of the doe-eyed songstress ... Read more...

Ringo! Stop the bitching about fan mail
A few minutes ago CNN ran a report about Ringo Starr. I perked up, because as a huge Beatles fan, any news about the Beatles is perk-worthy. Then the reliably alluring Kyra Phillips said something akin to, “Ringo is sick of your fan mail.” Wait. What? Then the broadcast turned to a YouTube message the onetime Richard Starkey of Rory Storm and the Hurricanes taped recently. Like, maybe, today. He speaks for 43 seconds. His message is: “Peace and love. ... Read more...

Acoustic Strip gig leads to record deal for Left Standing
It’s the stuff that local rock dreams are made of. A local band plays a local show and ends the night signing their names to a recording contract. It never happens, well, almost never. It started when the folks at Tom Kat Records took a liking to unsigned Vegas band Left Standing. After seeing them play once, they came to watch Left Standing’s Las Vegas Weekly-sponsored Acoustic Strip show at House of Blues a few weeks ago, and then everything ... Read more...

Is there a doctor in the house? Pop-rockers Air Raid Anthem to the rescue
Four men are on stage at Jillian’s in tube socks, booty shorts and headbands. They throw stuffed monkeys and homemade headbands into the crowd, while “mandancers” boogie behind them in spandex suits. They are local pop-rock band Air Raid Anthem, and they are willing to do whatever it takes to make it. “Vegas is a tough crowd,” explains lead singer Justin Harker. “It’s a lot of work. You have to love music or you’re going to fizzle out and become ... Read more...
