Opera training, metal sensibility

With a background in baroque opera, Charlie now growls and screams as the frontwoman for the metal band Bipolar. Yes, frontwoman, and yes, her name is Charlie (don’t ask for her real name—she’ll only cringe). A choir major who graduated from the Las Vegas Academy, Charlie and drummer Brian Hanks left Vegas for California and formed Bipolar in 2003. After making a name for themselves in Sacramento—even garnering a Sacramento Area Music Award as the best hard rock/metal band in ... Read more...

Drugs, brawls and rock ‘n’ roll: A chat with Unwritten Law

From backstage drugs to onstage fights, Southern California pop punk outfit Unwritten Law has had its share of drama since forming in the early ‘90s outside of San Diego. That drama has translated into different lineups throughout the band’s nearly 20-year run, but two core members have remained constant – vocalist Scott Russo and guitarist Steve Morris. In anticipation of their poolside show Friday night at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Russo opened up about violence among the band ... Read more...

It’s Thorogood’s microphone and he’ll do what he wants to

George Thorogood performing with Jonny Lang can’t even be billed as the old guard and the new guard of bluesy rock because Thorogood performs like a 30-year-old, and at 28, Lang has been in the game for half of his life. Lang, a blues guitar prodigy in the ‘90s when he started as a teenager, opened the show with a high energy set filled with hits like “I Am,” “Red Light” and “Living for the City.” This version of “Red ... Time and Time Again: Experiencing Counting Crows

Friday night, 07/24/09, 11:30 p.m. When I was 12 years old, my father gave me a cassette tape: August and Everything After. Even in his early 50s at the time, he enjoyed listening to college radio and picked up on the best of what was to come in the music world. Counting Crows was one of the bands he exposed me to and I absorbed every song as if it was the first time I had heard music. The lyrics ... Read more...

He’s still bad to the bone

George Thorogood was the first concert I attended after moving to fabulous Las Vegas. Rather than going for ‘Lil John at a club or The Killers, I took it old school and it was worth it. With iconic hits like “Bad to the Bone,” which I fell in love with all over again after hearing it during Lindsey Lohan’s poker scene in The Parent Trap, and “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer,” Thorogood’s music speaks for itself. You might be ... Read more...

Garage sale for gas: Pan de Sal and Kid Meets Cougar need your help to tour

As the old adage goes, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. In Pan de Sal and Kid Meets Cougar’s case, somebody’s discarded items could mean their bands’ extra gas money. The two bands are hosting a garage/bake sale on Saturday to raise money for their upcoming shows in California, Oregon and Washington. Used musical equipment, CDs and possibly furniture will be on sale, as well as cookies, cupcakes and candy. (No pan de sal, though.) The items for sale ... Read more...

A cultivated conversation with Counting Crows

Get ready for the Saturday Night Rebel Rockers Traveling Circus & Medicine Show… on a Friday night. Michael Franti & Spearhead and Augustana join Counting Crows onstage poolside at the Red Rock Casino for a multiband performance evocative of the Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Review. Counting Crow’s guitarist David “Immy” Immerglück chats about the tour with some of the best vocabulary we’ve ever encountered in an interview. (If you have trouble with any of Immy’s $10 vocab, consult the definitions ... Read more...

Marilyn Manson in Vegas: Win ‘em before you can buy ‘em!

With a stage name born from the combination of screen goddess Marilyn Monroe and murderer Charles Manson, androgynous shock rock royal Marilyn Manson has more than lived up to his moniker. Blink 182 reunion to be the subject of a documentary film

“Be warned,” reads the bio section on Blink 182 bassist Mark Hoppus’ Twitter page, “I tweet a LOT.” He lives up to the warning, tweeting about everything from keyboard lines (“Which has catchiest keyboard line: MGMT “Kids” or Jay-Z “Brush Your Shoudlers [sic] Off?”), to attending movie premieres (recently for Dare starring Emmy Rossum) to rehearsals for Blink 182’s reunion tour, which kicks off this Thursday at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. Forget silence, enjoy the Rumors

When Depeche Mode announced their concert at the Pearl next month, new wave junkies like myself rejoiced… until we saw the price of admission. The prolific band might be worth a $175-$200 ticket, but most of us are too poor to find out. Luckily, the monetarily challenged have a back-up plan: Blasphemous Rumors, a Los Angeles-based Depeche Mode tribute whose ticket prices are a fraction of the real band’s. Saturday’s Beauty Bar performance, for example, cost $12, $5 if you ... Read more...

Songs of love and Las Vegas with Brother Luke

His dark, glinting eyes are half-hidden by a cap and white tape circles a couple fingers, the byproduct of a particularly intense week on the dueling piano circuit. While Brother Luke quietly sets up his keyboard and djembe drum in the back of a busy lounge in the Monte Carlo, he is also observing, gathering inspiration for future songs. The room is full of out-of-towners visibly awestruck by their titillating environs. Brother Luke, a native Las Vegan, isn’t fazed by ... Read more...

Health hazards and heavy metal at the Killswitch Engage show

Some rules for the heavy metal show: Moshing and headbanging are sweaty activities; make sure to hydrate (and no, beer doesn’t count as hydration). When in the mosh pit, always be aware of the location of your body parts in relation to the body parts of others. Oh, and somewhere in the midst of that drinking, moshing and headbanging, maybe take a little time to watch the band, because they just might be completely awesome. All of these simple lessons ... Not just “The Motorcycle Girl”: Jes can stand on her own

We’re not sure which is sweeter: her personality or vocals. Though it’s been tough for female singer/songwriters to gain recognition in the dance music industry, Jes has become one of the genre’s few breakout vocalists. Fans sing along with every word and adore the rocktronica queen. This weekend, she’ll be in Vegas to perform at Rain on Saturday, but first, Jes gives us the scoop on emerging from anonymity and her upcoming album. When you first started out singing in ... Punk rock revivalists Rancid took to the stage at The Joint last night and showed Las Vegas that while they themselves may be older, wiser and more responsible, their tattoos and punk rock cred have withstood the test of time. Snoop still street after all these years

Fifteen cop cars are parked outside of the Primm casino, including a couple undercovers. Five white busses wait off the side, ready to haul any miscreants away to some unfriendly detention center for a not-so-good night’s sleep. Inside, men in snug tan uniforms have black gun belts circling their sturdy hips, and some wear the words “Gang Unit” imprinted in black across their chests. Snoop Dogg is also in the building—he has been relegated to the Primm Garden Valley Arena, ... Read more...
