Bobbi Blogs: It’s an honor just to be nominated

There’s something special about the day of the AVN Awards. It starts out like any other on the AEE floor—do some business, meet some fans and try to wedge in a halfway-decent lunch to fend off those oh-so-sexy stomach growls. The tension in the air is thick and it envelops every booth and everyone in the industry. The every conversation turns to who’s going to win what later in the evening. And everyone gets in on it, which is funny ... Read more...

A brief conversation about “dead” porn stars

Girls & Corpses describes itself as “sort of like Maxim magazine meets Dawn of the Dead.” With a description like that, you can’t take yourself too seriously. Here’s a conversation overheard at the magazine’s Adult Entertainment Expo booth, which featured two “dead” porn stars lying half naked in a clear body bag with a fake skull lying between them: AEE Attendee: You’re not fooling anyone. Dead people don’t have tans. Porn Star: If you die with a tan, you’re still ... Read more...

Bobbi Blogs: The platypus that is AEE

The AVN Adult Entertainment Expo is a strange beast. While it’s officially touted as a trade show, with all the trappings of such like keynote speakers, badges with matching lanyards and sponsored nightclub parties, it’s just as much a show for the fans. It’s a strange pairing, when you think about it. Undertakers’ convention don’t open their doors to tombstone and coffin enthusiasts and/or goths, after all. (I could have used a CES analogy here, but it’s too obvious don’t ... Read more...

Who’s at the front of the line for AEE?

“You’re going to want to get safely behind this table,” the man standing next to me warned. It was a few minutes before the doors opened to fans at the Adult Entertainment Expo Friday, and my new friend didn’t want me to get crushed in a stampede of fist-pumping porno fans excitedly making their way onto the convention floor. It was a sight to behold, I must admit, and I was enthralled. If you’ve ever watched the start of a ... Read more...

When porn stops being exciting and starts getting boring

Apparently, the third time isn’t as charming. This year marks my third trip to the Sands Expo Center to cover the Adult Entertainment Expo for Las Vegas Weekly and, to be honest, it’s been kind of boring. Maybe it was being there for Thursday’s trade and media expo, the day before the fans (who outnumber the media and business people by a large margin) are allowed in to gawk and get autographs. Maybe it was being there early Friday, wandering ... Read more...

Bobbi Blogs: The evolution of AVN (vestigial tales and all)

Before I got into the adult industry, over six years ago, what is now the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo was a part of the larger convention that dominates Vegas this time of year, the Consumer Electronics Show. You’d have to be a real old-timer to remember those days. We’re talking the time when the big-haired bleach blonde look was in— think Ginger Lynn, Seka and the legendary Savannah (not Samson). If the AVN show and CES were separate animals, biologists ... Read more...

Bobbi Blogs: See a porn star? Look down

If you’re anything like me, your parents used to chide you that you were going to school to learn, not for a fashion show. A pre-Hollywood action star and pre-Scientologist Will Smith said as much when he was the Fresh Prince, but at the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo, it’s as much a fashion show as it is a networking and business opportunity. I do more wardrobe changes for each day I’m there than when I’m on set, and that includes ... Read more...

Twas the night before the Adult Entertainment Expo…

….and all through the Sands Expo and Convention Center was the quiet, yet somewhat frantic, murmur of vendors scrambling to set up their display booths before the doors of the Expo open for trade and members of the press tomorrow at 10 am. Packing foam littered the floor, large shipping crates framed the room and booths were in various stages of assemblage. Some vendors were almost done, hanging signage and unpacking products. For others, especially those who had yet to ... Read more...
