CityCenter: Vdara & Vanity Fair Grand Opening

Even Hollywood heartthrob Orlando Bloom, his girlfriend Australian supermodel Miranda Kerr and beautiful actress Rosario Dawson were in awe of the new CityCenter project that celebrated its first opening last night with the new Vdara all-suites condo hotel premiere. Orlando, Miranda and Rosario were among the first guests to check in! The hotel opens officially to the public today.

Vanity Fair hosted the event with famed photographer, explorer, professional adventurer and environmentalist Sebastian Copeland. Rosario’s boyfriend DJ Mathieu Schreyer was the guest deejay behind the wheels of steel.

The gala was jam-packed with Las Vegas VIPS, past and present politicos, celebrity chefs and Strip headliners. I ran into Peepshow’s Josh Strickland with some of his gorgeous dancers, along with Chris Phillips and Marley Taylor from Zowie Bowie. I chatted with chefs Rick Moonen and Martin Heierling. Everyone was unanimous with raves and praise for the newest part of the Vegas skyline.

“It completely changes the town. It’s just one big wow,” Josh told me. Leading lens lady Denise Truscello, our contributing photographer Erik Kabik and our loyal VDLX reader Richard Corey also were on the Vdara scene to capture all the excitement.

Vdara is the first hotel to open at CityCenter. The Crystals palatial promenade of upscale retailers and restaurants will open tomorrow, followed by the luxurious Mandarin Oriental hotel on Friday. The Aria casino resort is set to open Dec. 16, and next year the boutique Harmon Hotel will open.

Check back later today for our exclusive opening-day interviews with MGM Chairman and CEO Jim Murren and CityCenter President Bobby Baldwin. Leading up to Vdara’s opening, we took a look at the all-suites condo hotel two weeks ago, as well as ran a five-part series on CityCenter. Yesterday, we posted a story and photo gallery from the Vdara ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Vdara is an all-suite hotel with 1,495 rooms and a spa designed for those who love the excitement of Las Vegas but prefer to enjoy it in a nongaming, smoke-free environment. Vdara is connected to Bellagio and directly adjacent to Aria, offering access to all the amenities and energy of CityCenter while also providing a retreat from it all.

Jim said, “We are incredibly proud to offer the world this first taste of all that CityCenter will bring to the Las Vegas Strip. Travelers will finally find in Las Vegas what they find in other great cities around the world -- spectacular architecture, culturally significant art, great public spaces, sophisticated hotels, unique restaurants and incredible amenities. We look forward to unveiling all of this and more as the month unfolds.”

Bobby said, “Vdara’s management, and all of the employees, have completed all of the pre-opening activities and have readied the hotel to open. Their excitement and enthusiasm defy description as they await the opportunity to welcome the first hotel guests and residents.”

Vdara is the first hotel to open at CityCenter, which in total will put 12,000 employees to work in Las Vegas. Symbolically, its employees were the first to walk through the doors to Vdara yesterday ahead of the first guest check-in.
