DWTS: Season 9, Finals

SPOILER ALERT: Please do not read any further if you want to get the full surprise and drama of watching the West Coast tape-delayed broadcast of ABC’s top-rated Dancing With the Stars. But come back after the show to compare notes with us!

As predicted in the final weeks, Donny Osmond with partner Kym Johnson won Season 9 of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars and the coveted mirrored disco ball trophy.

It all came down to the viewers' votes being tallied up with the judges’ scoring on last night’s show of Mya and Dmitry Chaplin in first place with 87, Donny and Kym in second place nipping at her heels with 85 and Kelly Osbourne and Louis Van Amstel trailing in third place. Click HERE for that report, and click HERE for our analysis today of how other front-runners on the leaderboard have had their hopes dashed in the finale.

Guests appearing on the show included superstar Whitney Houston, singer-contestant Macy Gray, former contestant Cloris Leachman and talk show titan Jerry Springer, who flew in from his America’s Got Talent Live at Planet Hollywood. Whitney was showered with dollars during her number and received hugs and a kiss from proud mom Cissy Houston at the side of the dance floor.

Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay finally got to show his Texas two-step that he’d planned before being KO’d by double foot fractures. There were dance-off battles between our UFC favorite Chuck Liddell and Iron Chef master Mark Dacascos, plus Michael Irving and former contestant Jerry Rice. Acidic comedian Jeffrey Ross returned with the Losers Club and inducted Ashley Hamilton for one final dance with Edyta Sliwinska. Poor Edyta!

She was dropped to the floor. Jeffrey rushed in to dance with Ashley. Both men ripped off their tux jackets and shirts to go bare chested to big audience cheers.

The three finalists had the chance for one final vote from the judges for their last dance of the season. Kelly and Louis went first with a Viennese waltz after a heart-tugging video in which both cried as she credited him and the judges for changing her life and giving her confidence. Said Louis, “You made me proud.” Amid the audience chanting, judge Bruno Tonioli said: “You may come from rock and roll royalty, but you are now a ballroom princess.” Carrie Ann Inaba added: “Nobody has ever touched me as much as you.”

Mya and Dmitry danced the jive, and Carrie Ann said: “You set the standard throughout the season. Bruno crowed: “Mya the magnificent.”

Donny and Kym followed with the Argentine tango. Kim, about to star on Broadway this weekend with Maksim Chmerkovskiy in Burn the Floor, wore a slinky, sexy, barely there, slit-everywhere dress. She wrapped her legs around Donny for most of the passionate dance. Said Carrie Ann: “Incredible artistry in motion.” Said Len: “You traveled a rocky road but never gave less than 100 percent. It’s not how you start but how you finished, and you finished as big as it gets.”

Scoring was 1, 2 and 3, with 30 points, 28 points and 26 points. Donny beat out Mya for first place, with Kelly in the third slot. Then the accountants took over to tally in the viewer votes, which accounted for half of the final score.

In the end after millions of votes and texts, it was Kelly who placed third. She said, “This has been an amazing, beautiful experience.” Finally it was between Mya and Donny, and our Flamingo headliner hero was announced the winner and handed the disco ball trophy. He promises it will be onstage at the Flamingo tomorrow night.

Donny summed up: “This ranks at the top of everything I’ve ever done in my entertainment career.”
