Las Vegas fans of boiled seafood should be familiar with the two Hot N Juicy Crawfish locations on Spring Mountain and the Boiling Crab on Decatur. Enter California Crab in the Henderson area. The long stretch of Eastern Avenue has become a great Asian food destination: Pho Saigon 8 (the best pho in town), Gaati Thai, Island Sushi and Grill, Lee’s Sandwiches, East Ocean Dim Sum & Seafood and No. 1 Boba Tea, to name a few. California Crab is a good addition.

The boiled seafood is on par with HNJ and Boiling Crab, although the shrimp at California Crab are plumper and juicier. The sauces (Cajun Sensation and garlic pepper were ordered) are generously integrated in the seafood and fries (the Parmesan garlic fries, for example, could be renamed Parmesan garlic, garlic fries). Manager Anthony offered a sneak-peek taste of an upcoming menu item: a wrap filled with pork belly fried rice. Hearty.

The highlight: Bananas in Pajamas (fried banana egg rolls with Magnolia ube ice cream). The rolls are hot and crispy, the taro ice cream is crazy-bright purple and sweet, and crunchy caramel sauce adds to the decadence.

The simple décor is seaside seafood shack cafeteria, but nobody goes to boiled seafood joints for the ambience. And the service was spotty, but the place has been open about a month, so give ’em time to work out minor kinks. Put on your bibs and get crackin’ at California Crab, fellow Hendo residents.
