Should you eat this? Del Taco’s new Surf & Turf Burrito

How epic is the Surf & Turf Burrito, really?

Two hours after I ate it, my mouth is still confused.

Del Taco’s Epic Surf & Turf Burrito, introduced to the world yesterday, sounded kinda weird on paper—shrimp and steak battling it out inside a single tortilla—but I had to taste for myself, to make certain I wouldn’t miss out on a culinary breakthrough.

Truth be told, I’m not a big fan of Del Taco’s steak—which can be chewily inconsistent and thus lags behind the chain’s chicken, its cruelly discontinued carnitas (sniff) and even its ground beef in my DT protein rankings—and I’m lukewarm at best on the concept of fried fast-food shrimp. Still, burrito ’em up with some rice and creamy sauce next to some crinkle-cut fries, and what’s the worst that could happen?

As it turns out, nothing terrible. I won’t tell you I nearly died trying to down it, because that didn’t happen. I actually finished the whole thing, though it wasn’t what I’d call good. Mostly it was just odd, with fish taco fillings (cabbage, sauce and battered shrimp) sharing mouthspace with regular burrito stuff (steak, rice and many packets of Del Scorcho sauce) without ever meshing. The shrimp tasted fried, the steak bits were bland and the creamy sauce took down everything in its path.

Bottom line: Keeping in mind that the thing costs $5.29—tying it with the Epic Fajita Steak Burrito as the steepest non-box-o’-tacos item at the location I visited—I’d recommend passing it up and dusting off a whole bunch of value-menu goodies instead. Or, you know, heading somewhere else when you actually want an epic burrito.
