Lakeside’s lobster bake takes you to New England

The restaurants at Wynn Las Vegas are not necessarily known for kickass deals, nor should they be. This is, after all, one of the most luxurious resorts in the history of the Strip. The prices are not low. But a special dinner experience available at Lakeside through September—and possibly longer—is more than worth its price tag.

The stunning seafood-centric restaurant guided by chefs David Walzog and Rene Lenger aims to transport you to New England in the summertime with the lobster bake, three courses that add up to a fantastic feast. It begins with a choice of soup or salad, but there’s really no choice to be made. As fresh and tasty as the chopped salad is—tomatoes, green beans, chickpeas, green peas, sweet peppers, MontAmoré cheese and edamame in a zinfandel vinaigrette—you must opt for King Crab chowder topped with crispy bacon and cappuccino foam in a sourdough bread bowl. As it is in several American coastal culinary capitals, this could and should be a meal all by itself. But it’s only the beginning at Lakeside.

The centerpiece is a traditional Maine lobster bake, a platter of middleneck clams and mussels, baby potatoes, corn and cipollini onions, crowned with four lovely lobsters. (This is for two people, people.) Working your way through this spread is as fun as it is delicious, and the best part is how the kitchen has prepared the lobster so you don’t have to dig through shells searching for sweet sea meat. Well, the grilled cornbread served on the side is pretty awesome, too. Maybe that’s the best part. Or maybe it’s the way the mussels soak in all the savory juices. I can’t decide.

Dinner ends with a dessert choice of summer berries with fresh vanilla whipped cream or pineapple upside down cake with pineapple ice and rum caramel. I recommend the latter as it’s made with Kauai Sugarloaf white pineapple, which has a truly pure sweetness and much less acidity than other Hawaiian pineapple.

The price of the lobster bake is $99 per person, served for two or more. Can you find a meal as memorable as this one elsewhere on the Strip for that price? Probably. But not this meal. This is the only place for this deal.

Lakeside Wynn, 888-352-3463. Daily, 5:30-10:30 p.m.
