Dining News & Notes: New eats at GVR, a grand wine tasting and more

Station Casinos recently announced a $35 million renovation project at its flagship Red Rock Resort, including the addition of several new restaurant concepts later this year. Now its Green Valley’s turn—a $20 million investment at Green Valley Ranch Resort will bring four new restaurants and bars to the Henderson property, as well as enhancements such as a new 30-foot LED marquee and a new keno lounge by spring 2015. New food and drink will come from: Pizza Rock, the multi-style pizzeria that made its debut in Downtown Las Vegas last year; Slice House, a casual sister restaurant from Pizza Rock creator Tony Gemignani; Mercadito, an award-winning Chicago-based Mexican restaurant also opening at Red Rock Resort; and Tippling Hall, a new bar concept from Mercadito Hospitality opening its first location in Chicago this summer.

The Wine Spectator Grand Tour returns to Las Vegas this Saturday, May 3, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Mirage. More than 200 of the world’s finest wineries will be pouring their best bottles, with a portion of proceeds benefitting the Wine Spectator Scholarship Foundation. Echo & Rig Steakhouse chef and restaurateur Sam Marvin will be taking his act to the Strip, creating five different food and beverage concepts for the upcoming Grand Bazaar Shops project under construction at Bally’s. Marvin’s separate shops will be selling cupcakes, ice cream, macaroons, meats and spices at the multi-venue outdoor retail, dining and entertainment destination set to open this fall.

Culinary Dropout at the Hard Rock Hotel is teaming up with Henderson’s Joseph James Brewery for a beer-pairing dinner on May 8 at 7 p.m. The prix fixe menu includes combos like artichoke hearts and truffled crescenza cheese with Citra Rye and 36-hour pork ribs with Double Red Imperial Stout. The price is $50 and reservations can be made by calling 522-8100.

Border Grill at Mandalay Bay is offering a special Mother’s Day cooking class with chefs Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken on May 10 from 10 a.m. to noon, inviting guests to learn how to make weekend brunch favorites including chorizo skillet chilaquiles and huevos rancheros. A multi-course brunch, signature cocktails and a recipe booklet are included for $100. For reservations, call 632-7403.

Ellis Island Casino is supporting Three Square with its BrewBQ on May 17 from 8 to 11 p.m., a celebration of spirits, beer and barbecue to benefit the local food bank. Tickets are $55-$85 and can be purchased at sincitybeerfestival.com.
