Brendan Scholz is a man of few words. Or, more accurately, the Lydia Vance vocalist/guitarist is a man of few short-term plans.

Along with guitarist Travis Naegle, bassist Jarred Cooper and drummer Aaron Weislogel, he’ll spend August 10 through 20 at Bavon, Virginia’s Studio Barbarosa—home of producer Michael “Elvis” Baskette (Iggy Pop, Incubus, Escape the Fate)—recording a follow-up EP to 2006’s Fight Fire With Kids on Fire. As for what to expect, the most Scholz can offer is, “It’s just going to be rock ’n’ roll straight up, just what we do. It’s got some old-school ’70s rock influences and some newer stuff; there’ll be some slower stuff and some hard stuff.”

How many songs will be included? “We’re not sure yet. We’re trying to decide what the most important tracks will be.”

Any songs that will definitely make the cut? “We’re pretty sure we’re going to be doing ‘You’re Killing Me Baby.’ That seems to be a crowd favorite. Everything else is kind of up in the air for right now.”

Is there a tentative title? “Not yet. We haven’t thought that far ahead. Something witty … We’ll have enough time to think of something short and sweet.”

Big picture, the vision is a bit less hazy. The band is trusting that Baskette’s pull (the producer is so chummy with Lydia Vance’s management that a simple MySpace “hit up” sealed the deal) will aid plans for shopping the disc to record labels. Signed or not, they’ll embark on a West Coast tour this fall. But ultimately the four-piece Spin magazine called “one of the best-kept secrets in the Vegas music scene” are most concerned with creating an album hometown fans will embrace. Or as Scholz succinctly puts it, “There’s going to be something for everyone, I think. It’s going to be unbelievable.”
