Every Little Step

Every Little Step is a documentary about dancers auditioning for a Broadway show about dancers auditioning for a Broadway show. That’s some seriously meta stuff, but James D. Stern and Adam Del Deo’s film about tryouts for the 2006 Broadway revival of A Chorus Line isn’t interested in giving its audience a head trip; it’s a straightforward boosterish movie about the glory of musicals, dancing, singing and the Great White Way, an entertaining 90 minutes packaged perfectly to generate interest in its source material.

That’s really what Stern and Del Deo do best here, since they only offer surface sketches of most of the people auditioning for the modern-day show. At least as much time is spent detailing the creation of the original production in 1975, with rapturous words reserved for the late Michael Bennett, the show’s original director. All of that history is fascinating stuff, given how groundbreaking the play was for its time, and the filmmakers make certain to showcase the great music and how well it still holds up. They’re less effective at getting us to care about the various auditioners, some of whom are glimpsed only once or twice before they’re suddenly members of the final cast. As a look at the nuts and bolts of the Broadway audition process, Every Little Step glosses over a lot of seemingly important details, but its DVD will make a great souvenir in some theater lobby.
