Second Wolf Parade album At Mount Zoomer felt dead on arrival, exiled to the kids table by kingly debut Apologies to the Queen Mary. (A shame, given how solidly Zoomer stands up two years later.) But full respect to the Canadians: Third record Expo 86 doesn’t aim to recapture the epic sweep of Apologies in some attempt to win back lost believers. It carves its own path—faster, punchier, dancier—even as it retains that overall Wolf Parade sound. Frontmen Spencer Krug and Dan Boeckner again split lead vocals, and while Krug’s tunes (“In the Direction of the Moon,” “What Did My Lover Say?”), unsurprisingly, engage deepest, Boeckner’s are fine fidgety fun, too. Happy stuff, especially if you dig Wolf Parade.
