The third film in the Swedish trilogy based on Stieg Larsson’s mega-popular crime novels, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest is a little livelier than its predecessor, The Girl Who Played With Fire, but it’s still tedious and convoluted, overly concerned with a grand conspiracy of boring characters sitting around an office. Compared to the snappy murder mystery of the first movie, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Hornet’s Nest is quite the slog. Still, it offers another chance to see the wonderful Noomi Rapace as formidable heroine Lisbeth Salander, who apparently has half of Sweden aligned against her. Lisbeth spends too much time confined to hospital rooms and jail cells in this movie, and her chemistry with journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Nyqvist) is again sidelined in favor of dull procedural details. The ending at least offers some satisfying comeuppance, but it’s a bit of a chore getting there.
