The owners of Downtown’s newest nightspot picked a fitting day to unveil their 1920s-themed cocktail stop. Mob Bar, taking over the space previously occupied by Sidebar, opened its doors this week on Repeal Day, December 5, revealing a redesigned space and menu. Modeled after a 1920s supper club, the bar sports staff in period attire, retro glassware and drinks with a mafia twist, like the Wise Guy and Tommy Gun. Stop by Monday-Saturday 4 p.m. to midnight to join the family.

And Downtown development is moving east, as well. On December 6, Mayor Carolyn Goodman joined the developers and owners of Club 2100, a new salsa bar and restaurant at Fremont St. and Eastern Ave., for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the renovation. Part of the Las Vegas Gateway Center’s shopping, dining and entertainment complex, the 8,500-square-foot club plans to host live bands daily after opening on New Year’s Eve. Hiring will begin next week.

The cowboy hats on the Strip this week are enough to get anyone into the rodeo spirit. How better to show your solidarity than with meat and whiskey? On Friday, Light Group hosts two cocktail dinners celebrating these two great pleasures. At Brand, Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller Jeff Arnett will lead a tasting paired with dishes like dry-rubbed pork ribs and peach cobbler, and at Stack, Crown Royal’s Andrew MacKay will serve cocktails that go perfectly with a Crown-infused menu featuring a 24-ounce tomahawk rib eye. Both 8 p.m. dinners cost $55.

College students are hitting the books as they prepare for finals and then a month of blessed, lecture-free vacation. And Rockhouse wants to help start their break on a drunken note. On December 14 the “ultra-dive bar” is hosting a Trade in Your Books bash and offering students a free Jäger Bomb or tequila shot for every unwanted book they bring. Even if you don’t want to ditch your Philosophy 101 text, anyone with a valid college ID gets a discounted open bar from 9 p.m. to midnight.
