I continue to be amazed at how many people still don’t know what I’m talking about when I point out that my favorite scene in The 40-Year-Old Virgin—a movie filled with classic scenes, I might add—is the one featuring Kevin Hart. “Kevin who?” they usually ask.
The Details
- Kevin Hart
- March 24, 8 p.m., $35-$75
- Mandalay Bay, 632-7580
The scene sneaks up on you: Hart, playing a customer at Smart Tech, asks an employee (Romany Malco) for a free extended warranty, and when he’s denied, he plays the race card: “Don’t be a negro, be my ni**a,” and before you know it, the scene has devolved into both men screaming threats, throwing out references to “Luca Perry from 20th and 25th” and “Rolling 20s,” “frosty,” “spoon” and getting “clapped up.” Where did that stuff come from?
As Hart yells at the end of the scene, it don’t f*cking matter. We’ve just seen two comics at the top of their game in a scene alternately terrifying and hilarious. Now that’s comedy. And as you’ll see this weekend in Las Vegas, Hart doesn’t need a foil to make you laugh.
