From the burgers and dogs at Holsteins, LBS and Pink’s to the gastropub fare at Public House to contemporary takes on classic cuisine at the Barrymore, Block 16 executive chef Anthony Meidenbauer runs the culinary spectrum. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, then, that his favorite eats in town also run the gamut.

Tacos el Gordo (3049 S. Las Vegas Blvd., 641-8228)

Meidenbauer’s favorite taco joint opened just down the street from the Royal Resort—home of the Barrymore—and he says the food is worth the chaos. “Everyone’s yelling and there are all kinds of lines. It actually scares people, because if you’re a gringo you’re like, ‘What the hell do I do here?’ But the adobada is unbelievable, to die for. And if you order al pastor at other Mexican restaurants, it’s not on the same playing field.”

Hot Dog Heaven (87 E. Lake Mead Parkway, 567-5050)

Meidenbauer is a huge fan of this hot dog hangout near downtown Henderson. He likes the food almost as much as the ambiance. “You never know if you’ll be sitting next to a Bentley or an old beater Omni from 1988. You sit in your car and roll your windows up and hope some vagrant doesn’t come knock on your window and ask for extra food or change. It’s awesome. Just make sure you ask for extra napkins, because they only give you like, two, and you’re going to make a mess in your car.”

Monta Noodle House (5030 Spring Mountain Road, Suite 6, 367-4600)

Chinatown’s acclaimed ramen spot is another Meidenbauer fave. “I could eat there every day. I get the tonkotsu-shoyu with extra chashu pork, butter and corn. Not enough people know to order the additional butter. Even the kimchee fried rice is ridiculous. Actually, all of the eight menu items are so good. Be sure to order the gyoza. They take forever, so make sure you order them as soon as you sit down.”
