Inspired by international fashion weeks like those in Paris, New York and Milan, 26-year-old Jenifer Strom decided it was high time Las Vegas got in on the action. “Our local designers have the talent, passion and drive to succeed,” Strom says, “but they need the exposure.” Part of a general movement to keep local talent local, Strom is determined to make changes. “My long-term goal is for Las Vegas to have exclusive showings, charity events, greater educational networking at local design schools and new fashion-related businesses.”

Las Vegas Fashion Week is a first step in that direction. With everything from nightly runway shows featuring the work of 40-plus local, national and international designers, and Downtown cocktail parties in various locations, Fashion Week celebrates Sin City’s stylish side May 14-21 with events in and around the World Market Center. Strom’s two years of work on this event will offer a diverse set of styles to “make sure we, as a community, have the opportunity to encourage aspiring young designers and residents with new possibilities.”

But what would the world of high fashion be without a little exclusivity? Although much of Fashion Week’s mission is about outreach—the schedule incorporates local charities and student-line presentation—the event will also host private international designer viewings by invite only. Fear not, though: Most events are accessible with the price of general admission with Thursday’s local showcase, Friday’s fashion charity dinner for women in need and Saturday’s designer gala collections as highlights.
