October Surprise
Opening reception: October 20, 7-9 p.m., VAST
Opening reception afterparty: 9 p.m.-midnight, USA Lounge
730 W. Sunset Rd., 323-240-2888

As if October Surprise, an exhibit of works by Alexis Smith (yes, the Alexis Smith) and other LA artists—Scott Grieger, Mark X Farina and Burton Machen—isn’t already an insanely triumphant moment for arts in the Valley, there’s more: Shannon McMackin, owner of V A S T space projects (formerly Pop Up Art House) in Henderson, is adding to the show’s opening night with a get-out-the-vote-rally and afterparty for Lonnie Hammargren, candidate for UNLV Regent—complete with DJ.

October Surprise, the politically weighty group show of mixed-media works and paintings, also features gonzo art political posters by Thomas W. Benton, including those that commemorate writer Hunter S. Thompson’s 1970 Freak Power campaign for Sheriff of Pitkin County. Also included are images by LA-based photojournalist Karen Ballard, who has covered war and politics for national publications.
