While many gay pride celebrations around the country occur in June to commemorate New York City’s famed Stonewall Riots of 1969, the Southern Nevada Association of Pride, Inc. moved its Las Vegas Pride to September last year—and it returns this week.

This year’s Pride is packed with fun and fabulous events (many family friendly), and it seems SNAPI has raised the bar for 2012. High-profile, LGBT-friendly celebrities have been booked, and more events have been added to the weeklong celebration. Considering the many mentions of marriage equality during this week’s DNC speeches, there might not be a better time to celebrate the gay community’s progress towards full-fledged LGBT equality.

Pride Parade: Three of the funniest women in comedy—Margaret Cho, Kathy Griffin and Joan Rivers—serve as the Friday parade’s honorary grand marshals this year, and the trio will also make an appearance at the parade’s pre-show at the Parade Main Stage (4th St. and Bridger Ave.). The parade will feature gay and straight businesses, LGBT organizations and SNAPI’s Pride royalty. (September 7, 8 p.m., free, 4th St. from Charleston Blvd. to Ogden Ave.)

Pride Festival: Continue the merriment on Saturday at this daylong outdoor Pride extravaganza. More than 100 exhibitors will set up shop, and the event will include performances by Neon Hitch, Fantasy’s Lorena Peril, comedian Leslie Jordan and the Las Vegas Contemporary Dance Theater. (September 8, noon-10 p.m., $10-$15, children 5 & under free, Clark County Government Center Amphitheater.)
