NPR’s Ira Glass, host of This American Life, is taking his show on the road. Saturday night he appears at the Smith Center, recounting humorous and profound moments from his broadcasting life.

The Internet tells me you used to be a magician. Have you seen any of our magic shows? I’m a big Penn & Teller fan. But I myself was never very good; I was a teenage magician who performed at kids’ parties. I can still perform a vanish, credibly, and I still, in special circumstances, will make a balloon animal.

So you won’t be performing magic at the Smith Center … I stand onstage with an iPad that has clips and quotes from our show and the music we use and sounds. I don’t just talk about the show; I re-create the show around me as I speak. I play funny and moving clips.

Are you cool or hip? The Internet is mixed on this one. Like most people in radio—and in magic—I’m not cool. I know people who are hip, and I can feel distance between them and me.

Twenty years down the line, if I have kids, I’ll want to tell them that Ira Glass interviewed me. So, do you have any questions? A friend told me that Vegas names businesses after the product they sell. Like, a nail salon would be called Nails. Can you think of any examples?

We’ve got a big hotel called THEhotel. Perfect.
