If Las Vegas ever seemed ideally suited for anything, it would be producing its own booze. George Racz of Las Vegas Distillery finally capitalized on that notion a few years ago, producing his own line of vodkas, whiskeys, gins, rums and, most notably, Rumskey, a 50-50 mixture of fermented molasses (rum) and whiskey mash. It’s aged two years and, at 80 proof, doesn’t have quite the character of the more mature, higher-alcohol rums and whiskeys out there. Still, Rumskey has a nice buttery nose, if a bit of an astringent taste when sampled on its own (the battling of the two spirits within, perhaps?).

This is a spirit more suited for mixing, and given its dual nature, I would suggest trying it with a variety of your favorite mixed drinks, particularly the sweeter ones. Rumskey is available at Albertsons, Lee’s Discount Liquor, Total Wine and Whole Foods, not to mention Half Full, right next to Las Vegas Distillery (7330 Eastgate Road). Its price differs depending on location, but supporting a locally made product? Well, that’s priceless.
