THE GOODWIN GAMES
Three stars
Mondays, 8:30 p.m., Fox

First announced more than a year ago as part of Fox’s fall 2012 schedule, The Goodwin Games finally makes it on the air this week with a reduced episode order (only seven were produced) and virtually no chance of surviving to a second season. In a weird way, that might actually be for the best: As set up in the first episode, the concept seems better suited for a movie than an ongoing series, with adult siblings Henry (Scott Foley), Chloe (Becki Newton) and Jimmy Goodwin (T.J. Miller) forced to compete in a series of challenges as conditions for receiving a massive inheritance from their late father (Beau Bridges).

With no end in sight, the creators would likely run out of clever games, and the premise would lose steam. But seven episodes is the perfect amount of time to see these likable characters go through some goofy situations and learn a bit about what it really means to be a family. The first episode has a few decent laughs, some strong performances and a unique premise. It’s probably a blessing that it won’t be wearing out its welcome.
