When you’ve already got the best beer fests in the city on lock, how do you get better? Perspective.
Motley Brews, founded in 2010 and host of the annual springtime Great Vegas Festival of Beer, expanded to San Diego this year with an August event. “It was great turnout, around 3,000 people on a hot day,” says Motley founder Brian Chapin. “It was an opportunity to step into a market that’s already very mature on the beer side, where there are tons of festivals, and what we did there was widely accepted. We’re going to use that to continue to raise the experience for our Vegas guests.”
The next experience is this month’s Downtown Brew Festival at the Clark County Amphitheater, a laid-back event capped at 3,500 people with plenty of music and food to match more than 200 brews from more than 60 brewers.

Chapin is especially excited about the event’s culinary offerings, like the VIP food section anchored by favorite local restaurants Blue Ribbon and Echo & Rig, and new musical acts Pumpkin and Vokab Kompany. But what about the beer? “One of our favorite things to do is introduce new brands to the area, and this time we have Founders coming in out of Michigan, just an amazing brewery. They are really gonna do well here.” Other new and returning brewers include Acoustic Ales, Chaucer’s Cellars, Left Hand, Shades of Pale, Pizza Port, Speakeasy and Stone.
“This is our favorite event, and this one will be the best so far,” Chapin says. “We’re just happy to see it grow.”
