ONE TO WATCH

That would be Carlin Isles, former nationally ranked sprinter, current blur on the USA Men’s Eagles Sevens. After playing football and running in college, Isles took up rugby as an adult and quickly gained attention for his speed and athleticism. That meant playing at a high level almost immediately and learning the game under a magnifying glass, joining players who’d been scoring tries for years.

Mike Friday, head coach of the U.S. men’s team, says it took a few seasons for Isles to make the transition, but today he’s an electric presence on the pitch who’s potent both offensively and defensively.

“Every time he gets the ball everybody’s intrigued to see what he does, because he has the ability to do something extraordinary with his feet,” Friday says.

Isles is one to watch in Las Vegas at USA Sevens—if you can spot him streaking down the field.
