Ultimate Cocktails for the New Year

Amateur and professional bartenders alike will find inspiration among the recipes and profiles of industry greats, such as "The Modern Mixologist," Tony Abou-Ganim. This month, Sean pays homage to Abou-Ganim, his mentor and friend. And just in time for the holidays, find the recipe for a hot, buttery classic, the Tom & Jerry. Come New Year's Eve, your guests will swoon for the bling cocktail, All That Glitters, which employs edible 23-carat gold leaf sprinkles as well as Granny Apple Schnapps, Goldschlager and Louis Roederer Cristal Champagne—guaranteed to sweeten any midnight toast.

A Clean Sweep

The Industry Broomball Games will commence Monday as local nightclubs and media outlets go head to head with the best use of the straw cleaning device since Quidditch. At the Hard Rockafella Center, the new ice rink in front of the Hard Rock Hotel, teams will face off like OCD-housewives-turned-hockey-fanatics. The rink is open to the public every day until 10 p.m., but will be cleared for the broom-bending industry rivalries. Tao vs. Pure, perhaps, or Tryst vs. Jet? Maybe SpyOnVegas vs. Eye On Vegas? This could get ugly.

Lights off at the Studio

Some clubs find it useful to close their doors during the holiday season, to wait out the pre-New Year's slump and to grant staff some well-earned downtime. But the closing of Studio 54 will be more than just time off for the midwinter lull. The closed doors from December 10-25 will also serve as a window for some serious renovation.

The majority of the attention will be paid to the dance floor and the stage, revamping the surfaces that used to shine black but now have the color of used coals.

"Everyone recognizes the name; that will never be taken away," said new general manager Anthony Olheiser. "We have a platform to work with that nobody else does. We just have to modernize it." The MGM will be dark across the board, as Tabu will also be closed for some R&R on December 14, and reopen for It industry Wednesday on December 27.

2006 is the new 1999

Prince has made it official: He will ring in 2007 with a special performance at 3121 in the Rio. It's the Ultimate 3121 Xperience—for $1,000 you can enjoy a six-course menu at 3121 Jazz Cuisine before hopping over to the VIP section. Your table comes with commemorative champagne glasses and a bottle of commemorative champagne, culminating with a toast, countdown and a live performance from the man who made 1999 cool. General admission is still a respectable $250.

Getting Around

No cover, one stop and four grand watering holes—MGM continues to pump life into its Ultimate Bar Hop promotion as things get going this Thursday (clever chums, aligning it with the closures of Tabú and Studio 54). With Teatro's new open-air reincarnation Rouge serving as the anchor, carousel addicts are encouraged to shuffle from Zuri to West Wing Bar, then cap things off with the dancers and craziness of Centrifuge.
