LINE PASS: Stirring it Up

Platinum makes Thursdays McDreamy

Justin Jimenez

It's understandably difficult to leave the sanctuary of your sofa for the weekly ABC phenomenon, but Stir offers sinkable plush seating for an ideal camp to curl up with the crew from Seattle Grace Hospital. The comfortable and sleek red décor, combined with subdued lighting, might even be more enticing than your living room.

The entire staff dons scrubs for the event, and there really is no better medicine than two-for-one drinks during the show (9 to 10 p.m.) and complimentary appetizers of micro-burgers along with lobster and chorizo tacos. The cocktail lineup is fabulous, taking wildly innovative recipes and infusing them into the Grey's Anatomy theme by way of Grey Goose. The Hospital Milk & Cookies chase the female clientele with Grey Goose Vanilla, Godiva White Chocolate and Navan Vanilla, garnished with Mini Oreos. For the gents there is the Dr. Feel Good, a mix of Grey Goose, Absentine and Stirring's Bitter Lemon Soda, a flavorful kick with a taste of black licorice. Other drinks, such as the McDreamy and the Hot Nurse, might entice you to still turn on TiVo, with parts of Izzie's latest drama escaping your memory after further indulgence into the drink menu.

"It's a safe haven filled with great people and wonderful libations," said Robert De La Rosa, Platinum's food and beverage manager. "We came up with the cocktails and wanted to put Grey Goose at the forefront because of the quality of the product and its versatility. The drinks are like the show: sexy, fun and tasteful, minus the drama."

The ingenuity behind the beverages isn't limited to Grey's, either. With mixology high on Platinum's priority list, new high-end signature cocktails are always appearing on the regularly updated menu.

"Our world-class culinary team treats the kitchen like a laboratory," De La Rosa said. "We have some of the best products you can find and treat the drinks like we treat our food: striving for freshness, balance—and finally, it needs to be memorable."

Mix 94.1-FM also does a live remote broadcast on-site and assists in the distribution of door prizes, which make commercial breaks something to look forward to. Prizes are handed out, ranging from T-shirts, dinner for two at the Platinum Restaurant, spa treatments and a weekend stay at the Marquis Suite to the grand prize: an all-expenses-paid trip for two to see a live show by The Fray—which performs some of the show's signature songs—in Savannah, Georgia.

While it's just in time for the new episodes starting January 11, the place is always a-buzz, even for reruns.

"We want to give locals a venue to enjoy the show away from home and away from the hustle and bustle at the Strip," De La Rosa added. "It's a great night for anyone, but the largest draw mirrors the demographic of the show, women in the 20-40 range, and it's never hard to get them to enjoy a McDreamy for $5."

The driving force behind Stir (open every night of the week) is Platinum VP and general manager Peter Rockwood. "Peter wanted to create a space that evolves and is transitional," said De La Rosa. "In the morning you can get a cappuccino and still cater to the power-lunch crowd at noon. At night the uniforms, lighting and music change and convert the space into the hip lounge that isn't overcrowded but still feels like a need-to-be-seen locale."

With no gaming on the property, the nonsmoking lounge and valet-only parking, the place exudes class.

"I can't imagine what we will be doing three months from now with the creativity engine we have here at the hotel," De La Rosa said. "Grey's is just one of several ideas we get to play with. It's pretty scary for our competition and beneficial for our patrons."
