In the Land of Sin and Collagen -- I mean sex sells

I must be coming up in the world. It was around this time last year that I met Ron Jeremy and was later asked to coordinate his birthday party. This year my time was spent getting Jenna Jameson to come into one of my client’s stores.

Whether or not you attend the actual AVN awards show every January it’s pretty evident that it’s here. Not only does the city’s male population triple, but if I had to guess I’d say 80 percent of the world’s collagen is temporarily contained within our city limits.  I think full lips are as pleasant as the next person, however some of these girls are living, breathing, blow-up dolls. It’s funny how “sexy” sometimes crosses the border into “disturbing”. But I suppose that’s really the founding principle of pornography.

And what is “pornography”? Years and years ago it was an at least mildly hushed subject reserved for single men, salacious husbands, and teenagers in the American Pie style.  Nowadays people getting busy on camera land mainstream endorsements and campaigns. Fourteen-year-olds know who “Jenna Jameson” is. High-end clothing retailers are asking me to dress her. I’m not sure what this says about our society but I don’t think I like it. Sure, you can say it’s the classic underdog story; a young girl finds a way out of her small town the only way she saw possible. Much like Anna Nicole Smith. But isn’t that a pretty limited way out? A huge percentage of working actors and models came from nothing and built their lives out from under that. While I don’t berate Jenna for her career, I do find it troubling how highly publicized her message is to highly impressionable ears.

I feel rather similar about Paris Hilton and reality TV stars like Lauren Conrad. Being famous for sex  -- or being famous for being born into wealth -- are two goals I see rising (alarmingly) in the 14-18 age bracket. I have no problem with what adults view as fun; I just wish adults were the only ones viewing it. In a world of innovation and progressive social acceptance, fantasy and reality are slowly becoming two ends of the same media fueled stick.
