Our favorite (and not-so-favorite) costumes at Marquee’s Halfway to Halloween

Marquee Nightclub put on its first-ever Halfway to Halloween party this week during its weekly Monday industry night, offering clubgoers in costumes free entry, an hour-long open bar and a shot at the evening costume contest’s $5K prize.

A longstanding nightlife staple in Las Vegas, the Halfway to Halloween parties are usually a great place to score some inspiration for that year’s look—and to take note of the fail-to-impress flops to avoid come late October. Read on for a few of our favorites:

For the ladies …

It should come as no surprise that many female clubgoers in costumed attendance were sporting the premade getups with adult edges commonly found at Halloween stores like Party City. But haven’t we seen enough sexy cops (I spotted two in one lap around Marquee’s Main Room), cheerleaders and corseted angels? Thankfully, a handful of females stepped up their costume game, either piecing outfits together themselves or offering a creative twist on how to spice up typically boring outfits.

Take the Sexy Astronaut, for example. Sure, opting for a white bikini in place of the massive, body-covering suit NASA’s space scientists wear wasn’t exactly novel, but it was the legit-looking helmet and sweet backpack fashioned to look like a jet pack that really made this look stand out. Seriously, the whole thing together just looked cool. And even more seriously, I want that backpack!

A seemingly out-of-the-box choice with pop-culture value, one clubgoer dressed as a Sexy My Little Pony Unicorn (because unicorns don’t wear shiny halter tops with matching boy-brief panties, right?). And even though she complemented her glittering gold getup with flowing turquoise locks (both on her head and pinned on as a “tail”), body paint and an interesting makeup job, what really made this outfit was the light-up horn (look at the picture in the gallery to the right and tell me I’m wrong). Hmm, wonder if the dude she was with all night was a Brony …

For the gentlemen …

Okay, guys. It’s time to have an honest conversation: You got served Monday night at Marquee. Not only did the ladies show up in droves with costumes on (you didn’t), they actually wore full-on costumes—not a pair of geek glasses and suspenders over what was obviously your standard club attire from last Friday night. So ditch the lazy costumes (we already have nerd-themed parties in Vegas anyways, think: CES week) and start brainstorming!

Sometimes you don’t even need to do anything novel, trendy or current; sometimes you just need to look freaking awesome. Take one dude dressed as the Starchild (Paul Stanley) from Kiss. He didn’t even have Stanley’s signature, studded singlet on, but with full makeup and either a wig or styled-out hair he captured the essence of the metal band’s frontman—and a lot of looks from passersby (which is all you want to do on Halloween, right?).

But if you must fall back on something totally predictable, at least spice it up in your own way. One dude dressed as the Devil had the right idea, adding some creative flair to the Halloween staple with a tail and horns that looked like they were made out of red, metal pipes. Paired with his standard clubwear (think: jeans, button-down, blazer), it kind of looked like an industrialized, slicker version of Al Pacino’s Satan in Devil’s Advocate. Points for artistic originality.

So, what are you waiting for? While Marquee billed the party as a Halfway to Halloween party, All Hallow’s Eve is only five months away, y’all! That’s more than enough time for you to impress this October 31.
