When the pool first opened in 2010, reports surfaced that intense sunlight reflecting off the glassy surface of the Vdara hotel during certain parts of the day focused the sunlight, like a magnifying glass, into a beam that slowly traveled across the pool area. There were reports that the focused sunlight made some sunbathers uncomfortably hot, while other reports came out that it melted some flimsy plastic or even drink cups. Company executives called it a "solar convergence phenomenon," but the world's news media preferred the term pool employees had used — a "death ray."
