    A Metro Police officer was helping hoist a stranded hiker to a rescue helicopter Monday night on Mount Charleston when the officer became detached from the line and fell to his death, Sheriff Doug Gillespie said. The officer, David Vanbuskirk, 36, of Henderson, had been with Metro since 1999.

    With most residents returning to their homes, massive smoke plumes disappearing and some firefighters returning home, it's becoming more and more apparent that the 28,000-acre wildfire that has blazed on Mount Charleston for the past two weeks is finally coming to a close. However, several problematic borders remain uncontained, and there are possible hot spots and areas where the fire could restart.

    The cost of fighting the fire that is threatening more than 500 structures on Mount Charleston has grown to $2.4 million, but officials indicated Sunday the effort was making headway. Officials with the Great Basin Incident Management team, which is directing firefighting efforts on Mount Charleston, said the fire grew by just 50 acres -- from 14,108 acres earlier in the day to 14,158 acres late Sunday afternoon.
