What to watch and where to go this week

Image
Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan is a must-see.

SEE

Black Swan Darren Aronofsky’s psychodrama about a ballet dancer who cracks under the pressure of a high-profile role is gloriously, intensely over-the-top, with a great performance by Natalie Portman and an engrossing visual style. Playing citywide.

Men of a Certain Age This low-key drama about three male friends (Ray Romano, Andre Braugher and Scott Bakula) dealing with the mundane indignities of middle age is funny and true, a subtle, well-written gem amid TNT’s lineup of formulaic cop shows. Mondays, 10 p.m., TNT.

The Assassination of Yogi Bear You don’t need to see Yogi Bear to know it’s not worth seeing, but this Jesse James spoof featuring the coward Boo-Boo murdering your pic-a-nic-basket-obsessed childhood icon? Definitely worth YouTubing.

VISIT

damnyouautocorrect.com As many know, the iPhone’s texting interface has an overly confident autocorrect feature. This site showcases the unfortunate results. One example among many: “I just locked my Jews in the car again. OMG. Keys. Not Jews.”

GO

Las Vegas Classic You’re off this week, but college basketball isn’t. Root against the team that dashed UNLV’s tourney hopes last season (Northern Iowa), or get a peek at a conference rival (New Mexico). Maybe they’ll meet in the final. December 23, $44-$110, Orleans Arena.

Jamie Lidell Missed Britain’s retro-soul crooner/sometime beatboxer at the first Vegoose? Still haven’t been inside the Cosmompolitan? Both? Now is the time. December 29-January 1, sets at 10 p.m. & midnight, free, Book & Stage.

BUY

Jenny Holzer art Her limited edition wooden postcards, for sale at Centerpiece Gallery, are to die for—and make lovely reminders that “Private Property Created Crime” and “Torture Is Barbaric.” $20 apiece.

USE

Flipboard for iPad Imagine that an upstart publisher turned your friends’ Facebook walls into a magazine, customized just for you. Now stop imagining. The publisher is Flipboard, the price is $0.00, and the new edition dropped last week.
