It’s easy to get pulled into the world of Jonny Detiger, mostly because dipping into his paintings and drawings is like swimming in a free-flowing conversation, enhanced by ’60s and ’70s pop culture and design. His show at Brett Wesley is titled Stream of Consciousness, which fits perfectly with the works displayed—continuums of drawn words, iconography, information and shapes contained in the subjects planted in ample landscapes of negative space. In many of the pieces, turntables, cars and figures meld into a web of shapes drawn in marker. A large abstract design covers each canvas (except one) like a watermark.

His painting “Pink Flamingo” differs in style but carries a similar dreamlike quality of familiarity wrapped in unfamiliarity: a family and mid-mod-style home are contemporized, but with a peculiar futuristic element. In one glance, Detiger’s work takes us back and launches us forward.
