You haven’t lived until you’ve had a hot dog thrown at you at a Mapes concert. Maybe drummer Clay Heximer wears his signature lucha libre mask to stay clean during shows, because you never know what will happen when The Mapes hit the stage.

The man behind the mask recently revealed that he’s battling renal carcinoma, better known as kidney cancer. After discovering his affected kidney had doubled in size, Heximer had surgery to have it removed. Doctors are optimistic that the disease hasn’t spread, so hopefully we’ll see Heximer back behind his drum kit sometime soon.

For now, the community activist, often known as the Mayor of Paradise Palms, is recovering. His friends and family have created a fund to assist with mounting medical bills (donate here, and will host a benefit concert Saturday, February 23 at 8 p.m. at Motor City Cafe. Thee Swank Bastards, Shark Pants, Fred Ward, Fuzz Solow, Fun in the Dark, The Seriouslys, Civic Minded Five and Stormtroopers of Dirk are set to perform.
