It’s dueling kings of comedy and dueling beauty pageants this weekend on the Strip. That sums up the great appeal of the regular weekend Las Vegas entertainment scene: if you don’t fancy one in a certain genre there’s always the other!
When it comes to comedy -- as our senior editor John Katsilometes explained in his Las Vegas Weekly cover story -- stand-up may well rule the roost with more comedy being performed on and around the Strip and downtown than in any other time in the city’s history!
This weekend, we have TV late-night talk titan Jay Leno dueling with comedy ventriloquist Jeff Dunham and a host of other visiting stand-up comics.
But we’ve also got the unusual and the unexpected: How did the calendar work out so that the new Miss Nevada pageant for Miss America beats the rival Miss USA pageant by just 24 hours?
Things are looking up -- five stories up -- for "Mindfreak" magician Criss Angel, who will be at the Fashion Show mall Saturday. He'll be blindfolded as he attempts to walk a narrow steel beam, jump 2 feet to another suspended beam and come back to earth safely. Nothing like trying to cheat death during the height of Saturday afternoon shopping. I just hope there are no sales to get the crowd out of control!
Some of the world’s biggest soccer stars are visiting from Britain, Europe and South America for a TV special. Don’t be surprised after Saturday’s welcome dinner at Hakkasan to see a slew of stars at different shows around town. Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke, former AC Milan star Andriy Shevchenko, Manchester City’s James Milner, Sunderland’s Adam Johnson, West Bromwich Albion’s James Morrison and Nicklas Bendnter from Juventus are just a few of the first names -- don’t be suprised if David Beckham is too far behind!
